It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History Eric Van Young on Dec. 20, 2024. He was 78. Van Young was an internationally celebrated scholar of colonial and 19th-century Latin American history, with an emphasis on Mexican history and culture.
San Diego-based business leader, art collector and philanthropist, Matthew Strauss, died on Aug. 20. He was 91. Together with his beloved wife of 70 years, Iris, Strauss made a major impact on San Diego with support in areas including arts, culture and cancer research.
William Kuperman, emeritus professor of oceanography and former Director of the Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, died June 30. He was 81. Kuperman was widely recognized for his contributions to the fields of underwater acoustics and acoustical oceanography.
Joris Gieskes, a marine chemist affiliated with Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego for nearly six decades, died May 19, 2024 at his home in Del Mar, Calif. He was 90.
